You should read the 4 Hour Work Week, it's really interesting about how to have more of a personally fulfilling life before retirement instead of waiting.

Anyways, as for taking a mental break from work every so often, I agree. It keeps employees motivated.

Hi Happy Employee!

Its a nice post actually. You just taught a lot of employees there to take at least a minute to enjoy the workload.

Having so many tasks to do and yet, feeling the guilt of chatting with someone or emailing a friend or even, watching the concert of your favorite band thru YouTube.

Well, its not that you are wasting the time paid by your boss. Its just, sometimes, you need to unwind. And that you need to relax, to be able to do the tasks assigned to you.

HR Good_Witch, seems like we're both suffering from similar symptoms. The worst is that I never had a boss who complained about me making personal phone calls or checking my emails.

This is as old as old can be, in Internet terms, but I glanced over the comments and couldn't help but notice that the true a-holes seem always to be the ones who are proud of it. It's like a positive feedback process. Being an a-hole is something that they derive something personally satisfying out of, and they don't care in the slightest how it affects others.

This is quite similar to cancer cells, as it appears to me. We may do well to recognize that procedures to remove cancer can be very invasive to the host. The 'good' people/workplaces ARE that host. They must be able to, as individuals or a group, gather the gumption to stick it to the a-holes.

For my part, I've already expended a lot of money and time taking an a-hole boss to court for harrassment/discrimination, and now I find myself working for another little Hitler. But I won't tell the 10's to kiss my ass--that would grant them satisfaction. What I will do is pwn them everytime I come across them, because I have a brain to be a grade AAA a-hole if I choose to, and I only choose to when it concerns ridding the workplace of cancer.

Sometimes doing personal stuff is a great way to take a mini-mental break from the office.

I had an employee say to me this week. "My father retired at 65 and then died at 74" It hit me that he was only free from work for 9 years. As a 24 year old the thought of sitting in an office being unhappy all day for my whole life is scary. If enjoying life means taking 1 minute to check my personal email then sign me up.

Listening to music at work = not geeky at all. Ear buds are tiny things that do two amazing things: help you concentrate and keep people out of your ear when you're trying to work. Personally, I would also keep the music off of the company computer and on your own device like an iPod. Great advice!
